Panama City Tour: Biomuseum and ruins

Pickup: Your driver-guide will pick you up from your hotel to commence our journey at the monumental historic site of Panama Viejo. Here, you’ll discover the history of the first city founded by Spanish colonizers on the Pacific coast of the American continent, along with the vestiges of its pre-Hispanic inhabitants. The Visitor Center spans 1.5 km and takes approximately 2 hours, including the museum visit, with a guided walk through the site and an ascent to the viewpoint. An internal transport system is available, ensuring comfort and allowing stops at key points to explore each monument. The Cathedral Tower, reaching a height of 30 meters, offers panoramic views of both the colonial and modern city.

Continuation to the Biomuseum: Our tour proceeds to the Biomuseum, an architectural marvel designed by Frank Gehry and the first of its kind in Latin America and the Caribbean. This 4000-square-meter facility tells the story of the Isthmus of Panama, its emergence from the sea that united continents, split oceans, and transformed global biodiversity. The museum features eight permanent exhibition galleries crafted by Bruce Mau Design, blending art and science to immerse visitors in the natural wonders and diverse ecosystems of Panama. A three-story projection space with ten screens further enhances the experience, showcasing the geological forces that shaped the isthmus and the ecological impact of species exchange between North and South America. The museum’s centerpiece includes three towering tectonic sculptures, 14 meters high, inviting tactile interaction with the geological world and showcasing 72 species that migrated across Panama’s land bridge.

This tour promises a profound exploration of Panama’s rich history and natural heritage, capped by Gehry’s visionary architectural masterpiece at the Biomuseum.

We pick you up at one of the authorized hotels in downtown Panama City. From there, we take you to the Amador dock for transit to the North or Gamboa dock for transit to the South. The direction of the sail will depend on the logistics imposed by the Canal administration and the maritime traffic of the day.

The boat that will host us offers onboard entertainment with a local speaker in both Spanish and English. Lunch, soft drinks, and snacks are included.

The total duration of the tour, including transport to the boarding pier, is approximately 5 to 6 hours. This includes crossing the Miraflores and Pedro Miguel locks, providing double the pleasure for tourists who are passionate about this engineering marvel.

Beginning in the 1600s, when the Spaniards discovered the islands’ rich pearl deposits, Las Perlas quickly became a coveted destination for political elites, wealthy families, and later, international celebrities. Even today, its untouched beauty continues to attract filmmakers—it’s not unusual to encounter a crew shooting on these semi-deserted shores.

6:45 AM – Check-in opens at Isla Flamenco, Amador, for the fast ferry to Isla Bolaños, located about 55 km from the mainland in the Gulf of Panama. Boarding and departure are at 7:30 AM. During the crossing, you may spot ships heading toward the Canal, dolphins gliding through the waves, and—between July and October—migrating whales.

Las Perlas Archipelago consists of more than 180 islands, around 40 of them inhabited and the rest completely wild.

Upon arrival at Isla Bolaños after approximately two hours, disembark into calm turquoise waters and palm-lined white sands. Visitors have access to beach chairs, umbrellas, bathrooms, showers, and a shaded dining area where lunch is served (choice of fish, chicken, or meat) along with water and iced tea. Juices and alcoholic beverages are available for purchase.

The resort also offers kayaking, paddleboarding, and snorkeling equipment for an additional fee if you wish to explore the surrounding waters.

Enjoy free time until 3:15 PM, when the ferry departs for Panama City. Arrival at Amador is expected around 5:00 PM.

For the Emberá indigenous community, rivers are not just sources of sustenance, providing fish and aquatic plants, but integral to their lifestyle and environmental conservation efforts. During this tour, you’ll immerse yourself in their way of life, learning their oral histories and cosmological beliefs, which recognize the spiritual essence within all things, animate and inanimate.

Meet your local driver-guide to begin the journey into the heart of Chagres National Park, deep within the rainforest. Travel up the Chagres River in a traditional wooden pirogue to discover the secrets of the Emberá culture, in a land remarkably preserved in its natural state. Witness Emberá craftsmanship, be enthralled by their music and dance, and gain insight from a shaman who will share the virtues and mystical properties of local plants.

Along the way, you’ll observe diverse bird species, trek through the forest, and swim in a natural pool beneath a refreshing waterfall. Lunch will feature delicious river fish served on a leaf, accompanied by tropical fruits. In the afternoon, return to Panama City, with an estimated arrival at your hotel by 2:30 PM.

According to legend, there was an indigenous princess who fell in love with a Spanish captain, who was called back to his homeland. Promising to wait for his return, she remained faithful year after year until she fell asleep and never woke up. Upon her death, she transformed into stones and rocks, and locals say she still waits atop the mountain now known as India Dormida (the Sleeping Indigenous Woman) in El Valle de Antón.

At 8:30 AM, our local driver-guide will meet you at your hotel, and we’ll embark on a 2-hour journey along the Pan-American Highway to reach El Valle de Antón in Coclé province. Upon arrival, we’ll visit a panoramic viewpoint to admire India Dormida, whose slopes resemble the reclining figure of the indigenous girl. We’ll then take a leisurely walk to visit the stunning 85-meter-high waterfall known as “El Chorro del Macho” and explore the small botanical and zoological garden, El Nispero, where you can observe various plants, flowers, birds, and animals, including the rare and famous golden frog, along the paths.

Afterward, enjoy a break for lunch (not included) at a local restaurant and explore the craft market, where you can find numerous handmade objects crafted by local indigenous and ethnic groups. In the afternoon, we’ll return to Panama City, with an estimated arrival at your hotel around 4:30 PM.
