Historic train in Panama

Full-Day Tour: Historic Train Journey, Panama Canal Center in Agua Clara, and Portobelo History Tour

For any true traveler, it’s not the beginning or the destination that counts—it’s the ride in between. This panoramic historical train is alive with sights and sounds that should be seen and heard. It’s a living, breathing entity. You just have to learn its rhythm, which is slow and charming. Everything in this tour is a marvel of old-fashioned engineering, starting with the train itself, then a look at the historical side of the famous Panama Canal, and finally, the fortress that protected Spanish gold from pirates and English enemies.

The itinerary

Morning Departure: Meet your driver-guide for a private transfer to Corozal Station for the morning ride at 7:15 AM on the historic panoramic carriage train that connects the capital to Colon. During this evocative journey on the train that has crossed the isthmus since 1885, we will observe the rainforest, the unspoiled nature of Soberanía National Park, and the route of the Camino de Cruces, formerly used by Spanish colonizers to transport wealth from the Americas to Spain.

Colon Station Arrival: Arrive at Colon Station at 8:15 AM, where we rejoin the driver-guide and continue to the Agua Clara Visitor Center. Inaugurated on June 26, 2016, the visitor center is perfect for understanding the operation of the new huge locks built for Post-Panamax ships. A technician will explain the transits in the Caribbean area of Panama in real time while we sit comfortably in the stands. We’ll walk through the ecological path, which offers a variety of plants and species, making the trail an adventure with great scenery and breathtaking views. Identify the different species indigenous to the Canal watershed area.

Portobelo Visit: Continue to the small town of Portobelo, declared a World Heritage Site for its cultural and folkloric charm. During the seventeenth and nineteenth centuries, Portobelo was the center of trade in the Caribbean Sea, from which Spanish galleons sailed to Europe loaded with gold from the colonies of South America. It was also the subject of numerous attacks by pirates, including Henry Morgan. We will visit the ruins of the Santiago and San Jeronimo Forts, surrounded by batteries of cannons that remain as silent witnesses to the glorious age of pirates. Explore the famous 15th-century customs house where Spanish treasures were kept and the church of Portobelo, where the miraculous Black Christ (Cristo Negro) is exhibited.

Return to Panama City: Estimated arrival at the hotel is 3:30 PM.
