About this Journey
I designed this trip for the first time just after COVID. One of my clients told me he had credit with a provider in Bolivia to visit the Salar and wanted to use it. My first thought was: “Wow—credit that can still be used after COVID! That’s surprisingly professional.”
During that period, we had all gone through difficulties, and it wasn’t obvious that credits issued before the pandemic would actually be honored.
The trip turned out to be fantastic.
The provider delivered an excellent experience, even adjusting his usual route to connect Chile with Bolivia. Ever since then, every time I include this small but incredibly rewarding excursion into the Bolivian Altiplano, clients are enthusiastic.
Why do I love it?
- Boutique stays blending comfort and remoteness
- Consistently positive client feedback
- Perfect balance of adventure, serenity, and discovery
- Unforgettable contrasts: salt, desert, and sky melting into one horizon
The itinerery
Your adventure begins as you land in Calama, gateway to the Atacama Desert, where our driver will welcome you and transfer you to your hotel in San Pedro de Atacama. After settling in, your journey starts with a magical afternoon in Valle de la Luna (Moon Valley). Traveling through the Cordillera de la Sal, you’ll explore the hidden entrance of Vallecito—an off-circuit route once used by miners. Walk among ancient salt formations, marvel at otherworldly landscapes, and end the day with a spectacular desert sunset, painting the valley in gold and crimson hues.
Today reveals the colorful heart of the desert. Begin your morning with the Hidden Lagoons of Baltinache, seven crystalline pools shimmering in shades of turquoise and emerald. Experience the surreal sensation of floating effortlessly in their mineral-rich waters. In the afternoon, travel deep into the Domeyko Mountain Range to discover Rainbow Valley, named for its mineral-streaked hills in reds, greens, and yellows. You’ll also visit Chuschul Pucará, an ancient pre-Columbian fortress offering a window into the desert’s rich ancestral heritage.
Embrace a day of adventure and discovery. Start with a trek through the Vilama River ravines, where secret waterfalls hide among volcanic cliffs. Cool off in crystal-clear pools before continuing your exploration by bike through Catarpe Valley and Devil’s Throat, navigating narrow salt corridors and towering rock formations. Every turn reveals another stunning view of the vast Atacama landscape—a photographer’s paradise.
After breakfast, your Chilean guide will drive you to the Bolivian border. Upon crossing, meet your local guide and begin your Bolivia Altiplano adventure. Visit the dazzling White and Green Lagoons, the surreal Salvador Dalí Desert, and relax in the natural Polques Hot Springs. The journey continues to Mirador Volcán Uturuncu and the Río Quetena, where the contrasts of color, light, and altitude define the wild beauty of Bolivia.
Set off early toward the legendary Uyuni Salt Flats (Salar de Uyuni), the world’s largest salt desert. Along the way, pass through the Valley of Rocks, Villa Alota, and San Agustín before reaching the blinding white expanse of the Salar. Visit Inca Huasi Island, an oasis of giant cacti rising from the salt crust. Enjoy a picnic lunch amid the vast silence, capture playful perspective photos, and witness one of the most breathtaking sunsets in South America. During the rainy season, the mirrored surface creates an unforgettable “sky reflection” effect.
Today’s route takes you across Bolivia’s most striking natural contrasts. Visit the train cemetery of Uyuni, where rusting locomotives whisper stories of the mining era. Continue toward San Cristóbal, the Valley of Rocks, and the chain of high-altitude lagoons—Cañapa, Hedionda, Chiarcota, Honda, Ramaditas, and the red sands of the Siloli Desert—each one more mesmerizing than the last.
Begin your journey back across the Siloli Desert, visiting the surreal Árbol de Piedra, the flamingo-filled Laguna Colorada, and the steaming Sol de Mañana geysers. A final soak in the thermal springs offers the perfect farewell to Bolivia’s wild beauty. Arrive at the Hito Cajón border by late morning, where your Chilean driver will meet you for the return to San Pedro de Atacama.
Your expedition concludes with one of the Atacama’s greatest natural spectacles: El Tatio Geysers, the world’s third-largest geothermal field, located at 4,320 meters above sea level. Witness columns of steam rise dramatically against the Andean sunrise. On the return, pass through the traditional villages of Machuca and Putana, where llamas graze peacefully by the river. In the afternoon, transfer directly to the airport for your flight to Santiago, carrying with you memories of desert sunsets, starlit nights, and the magic of Chile and Bolivia’s wild frontiers.
