Today you traverse Patagonia from coast to cordillera, following a route that feels like traveling back in geological time. On the way, explore the Sarmiento Petrified Forest—an ancient, surreal landscape of stone trees and silent desert.

By afternoon you arrive in the heart of Patagonia National Park.

Parque Patagonia holds one of the world’s highest concentrations of wild pumas, and these days are dedicated to entering their realm with patience, humility, and expert guidance.

With skilled trackers who read the landscape like a living story, you embark on moderate off-trail walks, moving quietly through vast steppe, canyons, and golden valleys. Laguna de los Tres is the iconic hike of El Chaltén — the journey that brings you to the very base of Mount Fitz Roy, through changing landscapes where the forest, granite spires, and glaciers shape a world of pure Patagonian magic.

The day begins with an early transfer from the hotel to the trailhead at the Río Eléctrico bridge, 16 km from town. From here, the path leads into a serene lenga forest, its branches sheltering you from the winds that sweep down from the Southern Patagonian Ice Field. Along the way, glaciers reveal themselves one by one: Marconi, Eléctrico, Cagliero, and, in the distance, Vespignani—silent giants carved by time.

A gentle ascent brings you to the Piedras Blancas viewpoint, where ice and mountain meet in breathtaking stillness. Continuing toward Poincenot Camp, the skyline sharpens into a crown of granite: Saint Exupéry, Poincenot, Mermoz, Guillaumet—and the unmistakable presence of Fitz Roy.

From Poincenot begins the most demanding stretch: a single, unforgettable kilometer climbing 400 meters over rocky, uneven terrain. It’s a slow, determined ascent. But when you reach the top and the turquoise mirror of Laguna de los Tres appears below Fitz Roy’s towering walls, the effort melts into awe.

After lunch with one of Patagonia’s most spectacular views, the descent begins. The return path leads past the peaceful waters of Laguna Capri and the lookout over the Río de las Vueltas, before arriving once more in El Chaltén—tired, exhilarated, and carrying the feeling of having touched something sacred.

Laguna Capri is one of those hikes where the rhythm of the trail slowly guides you into the heart of El Chaltén’s wilderness. The adventure begins on the Fitz Roy trail, with a gentle ascent that opens onto sweeping views of the Río de las Vueltas valley — a vast, glacial-carved landscape that immediately sets the tone for the day.

As the path winds deeper into the forest, the hush of Patagonian lenga and ñire trees surrounds you. Here, nature feels close: the tapping of the Magellanic woodpecker echoing through the branches, the fleeting presence of foxes and hares weaving their way through the undergrowth, the scent of earth and wind and cold mountain air.

Then, almost unexpectedly, the trees part and Laguna Capri appears — calm, clear, and framed by sandy and rocky shores. And beyond the lagoon, rising like a dream, stands Mount Fitz Roy. On still days, the reflection on the water makes the moment feel almost unreal.
