Chile and Argentina

Patagonia for First-Timers

The Essential 10-Days Itinerary in Patagonia

Patagonia is one of those destinations that rewards thoughtful travel.

Distances are vast, weather changes quickly, and some of the most memorable experiences happen when there is enough time to simply absorb the landscape.

For first-time visitors, I recommend focusing on a handful of iconic destinations rather than trying to see everything. This itinerary combines the highlights of Chilean and Argentine Patagonia while maintaining a comfortable pace and allowing time to truly experience each place.

Highlights

Why This Journey Lets You Experience Patagonia, Not Just See It

Designing a 10-day Patagonia itinerary is all about balance. Patagonia is one of the world’s most spectacular regions, but its immense size makes it impossible to see everything in a single trip. Rather than rushing from place to place, this carefully crafted journey focuses on the destinations that best capture the essence of both Chilean and Argentine Patagonia.

From the vibrant streets of Santiago to the dramatic peaks of Torres del Paine, the immense ice walls of Perito Moreno Glacier, and the iconic landscapes of El Chaltén and Mount Fitz Roy, this itinerary combines Patagonia’s most celebrated highlights with enough time to truly experience them. The journey concludes in Buenos Aires, offering a fascinating contrast between Patagonia’s vast wilderness and Argentina’s rich cultural heritage.

Ideal for first-time visitors, this itinerary showcases the region’s most iconic landscapes while maintaining a comfortable pace and minimizing long travel days. The result is a more immersive and rewarding experience, allowing travelers to connect with Patagonia’s mountains, glaciers, wildlife, and remote beauty without feeling rushed.

For those seeking a meaningful introduction to South America’s last great wilderness, this 10-day Patagonia itinerary offers the perfect balance between exploration, comfort, and discovery.

The itinerery

Arrive in Santiago, Chile’s vibrant capital, framed by the Andes Mountains.

Depending on your arrival time, explore the historic centre, visit one of the city’s contemporary neighbourhoods, or enjoy Chilean cuisine at one of Santiago’s excellent restaurants.

Transfer through the Patagonian steppe towards Torres del Paine National Park, one of South America’s most spectacular protected areas.

The journey itself offers a first introduction to Patagonia’s immense landscapes.

Overnight inside or near Torres del Paine National Park.

Spend the day exploring the park’s iconic scenery.

Highlights may include:

  • Lake Pehoé
  • Salto Grande
  • Grey Lake
  • Nordenskjöld Lake

Depending on interests and fitness levels, travellers can choose between scenic drives, shorter walks or more challenging hikes.

The Base Torres trail is the most famous route, while many visitors prefer quieter trails that reveal equally impressive landscapes.

Overnight in Torres del Paine.

Visit one of Patagonia’s most extraordinary natural wonders: the Perito Moreno Glacier.

Unlike many glaciers around the world, Perito Moreno continues to advance, creating spectacular ice falls and dramatic scenery.

Visitors can explore the network of walkways overlooking the glacier or choose optional activities such as boat excursions.

Overnight in El Calafate.

A full day dedicated to Patagonia’s mountain scenery.

Popular options include:

  • Laguna Capri
