Nicaragua

Full immersion in Somoto

Experience a two-day full-time tour exploring the adventure of Somoto Canyon and discovering the culture of Northern Nicaragua.

Perhaps travel cannot eradicate bigotry, but by demonstrating that all peoples cry, laugh, eat, and love, it introduces the idea that through understanding, we can potentially forge friendships. This concept is even more profound when experienced in a magical setting like the area surrounding the magnificent Somoto Canyon. When you join us, we will take you on a journey to visit the Canyon and embark on a thrilling adventure that includes swimming, river crossings, hiking, and even learning how to milk a cow. The following day, instead of diving into water, you’ll immerse yourself in our culture with a journey to meet local artisans, craftsmen, women, and cooperatives. We eagerly await your arrival—will you join us?

The itinerary

DAY 1

Arrive at the hostel in the Somoto area and check in.

DAY 2

After breakfast, we gather at 8:30 am at the entrance of Somoto Canyon. We begin our exploration of the national park using three combined methods: hiking where trails exist, and utilizing boat rides and tubing to navigate the river and certain sections of the canyon (using large floats to slide down the gentle waters of the Coco River).

Throughout the day, we take breaks to allow you to swim in the crystal-clear waters of the river. For the adventurous, there’s an opportunity to dive from heights as tall as 15 meters into the canyon.

During the 9 km circuit, we ascend to the upper part of the canyon where breathtaking panoramic viewpoints await. We make a brief detour to visit a local farm, where you can learn about milking cows and making traditional corn tortillas.

After the excursion, we return to our hostel for lunch.

Enjoy some leisure time to appreciate nature or relax.

Around 6:30 pm, we gather for dinner.

Overnight stay at the hostel in the area.

DAY 3

We begin the day with a typical Nicaraguan breakfast before heading to Somoto to visit an artisanal rosquilla production, the area’s typical cookies.

Next, we visit the central park with its historic church, the oldest in the country.

We conclude the morning with a visit to the local information center, where the staff provides fascinating insights into the area’s history and geological aspects of Madriz Department.

Then, we proceed to the nearby indigenous village of San Lucas. Here, locals share their history, social organization, and community activities. If fortunate, they may show us a historical relic—a book bearing the gold signature of the King of Spain.

Our next stop is at the Bruja Lagoon, where we stroll near the water and admire the beauty of the surroundings.

Finally, we head to San Jose de Cusmapa, the highest municipality in the country (1600 m above sea level), surrounded by vast forests. From here, we enjoy views of the Gulf of Fonseca, which borders Nicaragua, Honduras, and El Salvador. We visit a women’s cooperative of the pre-Columbian Chorotega ethnic group, known for their pine wood crafts.

Return to the hostel for dinner.

DAY 4

Enjoy breakfast at the hostel and check out.
