The curious mind looks at history to understand who we are and why we are the way we are, but here in Leon to find reasons you also have to look at geology. Leon boils. For real. From the beginning the story of the town was permanently connected with its volcanoes. The first settlement of Leon was in fact destroyed by a crazy eruption in 1594 after just 70 years from its foundation. With time the people of Leon always were the more creative and unstable in the country. Here are the universities, the poets and the rebels. How can’t be any different when the lakes are volcanics lagoons and the earth is so warm that the mud is hot to the point of boiling?

The itinerary

We pick you up at your hotel at 7 am and we make the first stop at “los Hervideros de San Jacinto”, an area with small thermal springs and mud pools, somehow connected to the nearby Telica volcano. It is a sulfur-scented place that looks like a lunar landscape.

After the walk here we head to the Ruinas de Leon Viejo where we arrive around 10:30 am.

This archaeological site – UNESCO heritage  – illustrates the architecture, lifestyle and social structures of the first Spanish settlement, founded by Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba in 1524. Subsequently the city was abandoned by its inhabitants for fear of the eruptions of the nearby Momotombo volcano.

Driving 10 minutes, we arrive on the shores of Lake Managua and appreciate the extraordinary view of the Momotombo volcano.

Then, we take a 20-minute walk to reach the beautiful Asososca lagoon, surrounded by nature. Relax and, if you wish, take a refreshing swim. Box lunch included.

We return to Leon where we arrive about 3:00 pm.
