Heredia: food and culture

Culture, community, and food come together in Heredia's comprehensive food tour, featuring a cooking class with Maria, your local aunt.

Families and communities are the cradle of our food and culinary habits. Food isn’t merely rational; it emerges from the soil to be cooked and prepared by caring hands. It’s steeped in traditions, relationships, habits, and the local climate. Enjoying good food isn’t enough; it’s essential to discuss it with someone who understands its essence. For this tour, we invite you just outside San José to the cultural town of Heredia, not only to eat but to experience food in its entirety. Meet the growers, the sellers, and finally, those who prepare it. Let’s start a conversation, and bon appétit!

The itinerary

Transfer to the nearby Province of Heredia, known as the “land of flowers,” where we explore the village of Barva de Heredia, steeped in culture, folklore, and tradition. Our first stop is at the Museum of Popular Culture, which aims to strengthen the University-Costa Rican Society link and showcases the country’s rich traditions.

Next, we visit Heredia’s municipal market, a Costa Rican institution founded in 1889. Here, we indulge in a variety of colorful tropical fruits sourced from different regions of the country.

Following our market experience, “Heredia’s aunt” warmly welcomes us into her home, where we share convivial moments and learn to prepare some typical dishes together.

We return to San José at the end of our enriching day.
