The itinerary
Chacocente is one of the major dry tropical forest reserves in Nicaragua, hosting a diverse array of flora and fauna native to this pristine environment.
Along the shores of this reserve, spanning 11 km of coastline, millions of turtles, predominantly Paslama but also including Carey, Tora, and Torita, come each year to lay their eggs.
The mass arrivals begin in July and continue until January. To protect the eggs from looters who sell them as a delicacy, nests are relocated and guarded until they hatch, which takes about 45 to 50 days.
We’ll witness the breathtaking sunset in the reserve and wait for approximately an hour for the turtles to start arriving after dark. It takes about 40 minutes to reach this ancient natural spectacle from our starting point. Once in the reserve, you can walk along the beach, go trekking, bird watching, or even surfing, as there is an excellent surf break.
For your convenience, this experience includes an overnight stay after the turtle tour. We have selected a charming hostel just a few meters from the beach, recently built and equipped with a full kitchen for guest use and shared, comfortable bathrooms/showers.
This is a magical trip you won’t want to miss!
