Sunrise at Cerro Pelado

Moonlight hike on Cerro Pelado, beginning at midnight to witness the sunrise from the summit of the mountain.

“A dreamer is one who can only find his way by moonlight, and his punishment is that he sees the dawn before the rest of the world.” This beautiful Oscar Wilde quote seamlessly integrates into the essence of his characters. Wilde, a man who valued beauty over ugliness, intelligence over stupidity, and personal growth over narrow-mindedness, clearly favored dreams over reality. However, we are not that pessimistic. Walking consciously under the moonlight, navigating by the guidance of our senses and a flashlight, can only make us appreciate the sunrise all the more. There’s no need to escape into fantasy when the world itself, especially atop Cerro Pelado in Costa Rica, is already so breathtakingly beautiful.

The itinerary

We leave the hotel just before midnight and head to a natural wonder in the Guanacaste Province, between Cañas and Bagaces.

After a 3-hour drive, we reach Cerro Pelado, an extinct volcano, and begin our hike. The moonlit excursion covers a total of 5 km, leading us along a path that starts steeply and then continues along a ridge (the ancient crater rim). From here, you can enjoy an extraordinary view of the wind turbines of Tilaran, the Gulf of Nicoya, and other volcanoes in the area, including Rincon de la Vieja.

After the sunrise spectacle, we depart from this location and stop for a typical Costa Rican breakfast before returning to the capital.
