The God Sibö was born in a plane of devils. One day he decided to create the Earth and the sky but the land was dry and unusable. So he called upon his friend the Bat, who had bitten Sibö sister and from his feces started growing trees and crops. Then he took the corn seeds and planted them to create the Bribri people, divided into groups and told them not to marry within their own clan. He gave the magic stones to the awápa (shamans) and told them to cure illness and protect souls. He told the people that kinship is transmitted matrilineally and to respect women as well as men.
This tour will bring you to discover Sibö worship temple, the stories surrounding the creation of the world and the use of animals to bring moral guidance to the human race.
The itinerery
With today’s day tour, we first of all know the sacred Temple of the Bribri, a fundamental reference point for this community. We reach our destination with a journey partly by boat (on the Telire-Lari river) and partly by car.
It is the place where families and friends gather, strengthen their bonds and dialogue with Sibú, the Bribri god of creation. In fact, this construction, which has a typical cone shape, represents the creation of the world and the teachings that Sibú has imparted to humanity.
With this experience we learn how the temple is built and how the inauguration ceremony of this very important construction takes place. We also visit the surroundings to understand about the shaman’s activity and to see an ancient and traditional grinding stone used in the Bribri cuisine.
We enjoy a convivial moment sharing lunch with the Bribri community and learning about their extremely healthy eating style, which includes a lot of fruit, mostly unknown in the Western world and avoids fried food. Other key elements in the Bribri diet are corn and cocoa, often used in ceremonies and purification rites.
