Leon Viejo and Nature

Embark on a full-day journey from León, exploring thermal springs at "Los Hervideros de San Jacinto," UNESCO-listed ruins of León Viejo, and natural wonders like Lake Managua and Asososca Lagoon

In León, understanding who we are and why we are this way requires looking not just at history, but also at geology. León literally boils—its story has always been intertwined with its volcanoes. The town’s first settlement was destroyed by a dramatic eruption in 1594, just 70 years after its founding. Over time, León has been known for its creativity and volatility, home to universities, poets, and rebels. It’s no surprise, given the volcanic lakes and the earth so warm that mud can reach boiling temperatures.

The itinerary

We’ll pick you up from your hotel at 7 am to begin our journey, starting with our first stop at “Los Hervideros de San Jacinto,” an area with small thermal springs and mud pools linked to the nearby Telica volcano. This sulfur-scented spot resembles a lunar landscape.

After exploring there, we’ll proceed to the Ruins of León Viejo, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, arriving around 10:30 am. These archaeological remains showcase the architecture, lifestyle, and social structures of the first Spanish settlement, founded by Francisco Hernandez de Cordoba in 1524. The city was abandoned later due to fears of eruptions from the nearby Momotombo volcano.

A short 10-minute drive takes us to the shores of Lake Managua, where you can enjoy a breathtaking view of the majestic Momotombo volcano.

Next, we’ll take a pleasant 20-minute walk to reach the picturesque Asososca Lagoon, surrounded by natural beauty. Relax and take a refreshing swim, with a boxed lunch provided.
