Cerro Negro

Half-day tour to ascend Cerro Negro Volcano and experience the thrill of ash boarding down its slopes—a must-do adventure in León!

Have you ever heard of “ash boarding”? No? What about “volcano surfing”? If your answer is still no, we are here to enlighten you—or better yet, to bring you to practice one of the most absurd and fun sports in the world.

Being in León, wait for us to pick you up and start an adventure that is worth a trip to Nicaragua. Set on one of the country’s most fascinating volcanoes—a small black hill that is actually still active—you can jump on a board and slide down its slope of ashes. Just to say… the way up is quite a sight too.

The itinerary

We pick you up at your hotel and take you in a 4×4 to the “Las Pilas-El Hoyo” Nature Reserve for a unique experience on Cerro Negro volcano, part of the volcanic chain Los Maribios, where seven volcanoes line up like skittles.

This active volcano—the youngest in Central America—has black walls covered in pulverized lava and is completely devoid of vegetation since the last strong eruption in 1999.

After an easy hour-long walk to the summit, you’ll be rewarded with breathtaking views of the green plains and surrounding volcanoes.

Then, the excitement begins. We’ll don appropriate suits and slide back down to the valley on surf-type boards, a simple and fun activity!

We’ll return to León in our vehicle.
