Islets of Granada

Join us for a boat trip on the great Nicaragua Lake to explore some of the 365 beautiful islands near Granada.

Kaboom! Who knows when, but a loooooong time ago, Volcano Mombacho erupted and collapsed into nearby Nicaragua Lake, creating a small archipelago of 365 tiny islands—one for each day of the year. Today, some of these islands are inhabited by prominent Nicaraguan families, others by monkeys, and some are simply there to welcome us for a visit. Join us on this boat trip!

The itinerary

We gather in the city center in the afternoon and proceed to the port for a boat excursion on Lake Nicaragua, navigating among some of the 365 islands (isletas) off Granada. These islands vary in size and character—some are inhabited, others abandoned, often lush with vegetation and home to diverse bird species and monkeys. A unique feature of the lake is its freshwater sharks.

Our tour includes a visit to an island where Spanish settlers once erected a small fort to fend off English navies and pirates. Later, we disembark on another island to savor the final moments of sunlight over the lake and enjoy refreshments before returning to the port and back to the city center.
