Solentiname Archipelago

Explore the Solentiname Archipelago and Los Guatuzos Wildlife Refuge on our 3-day, 2-night tour.

In the realm of dreams, life is rarely about numbers. Surely none of you set out on this wonderful trip thinking, “Let’s go and crunch some numbers.” But, indulge us for a moment and consider this: Lake Nicaragua spans 8,264 km², making it the second largest lake in all of Latin America. Within its waters lie over 400 islands, most formed by volcanoes or volcanic eruptions. Along its shores is the Guatuzos Wildlife Refuge, home to 389 species of native birds and thousands of migratory birds, 81 species of amphibians, 136 species of reptiles, and 42 species of mammals. The refuge also boasts 315 species of plants, including 130 types of orchids. Additionally, twelve rivers flow through the reserve.

So, shall we test our luck with these numbers, or are you already convinced to join us? We offer a unique perspective on the Archipelago of Solentiname and the Guatuzos Wildlife Refuge with this 3-day tour.

The itinerary

Day 1

We gather in San Carlos and embark on a boat journey to Mancarrón Island, the largest in the Solentiname Archipelago situated in the expansive Lake Nicaragua. Here, we engage with local inhabitants, particularly the community of artisans who warmly welcome us into their homes to showcase their crafts. Our guide provides insights into the significant contributions of Ernesto Cardenal, the priest, theologian, and writer, who played a pivotal role in enhancing the island’s development and local livelihoods.

Leaving Mancarrón, we cruise past two smaller islands teeming with lush vegetation, inhabited by families of monkeys and numerous bird species.

Our final destination for the day is San Fernando Island, where we stroll along its scenic flower-lined paths and witness what many regard as Nicaragua’s most breathtaking sunset. After sunset, we embark on a boat tour to search for crocodiles in the area.

Day 2

Today is dedicated to exploring nature with an excursion into the Guatuzos Wildlife Refuge, a vast area on the Costa Rican border renowned for its forests, wetlands, and rich biodiversity. We navigate Lake Nicaragua and venture along the Papaturro River, immersing ourselves in this natural paradise.

While sightings of larger mammals like jaguars and pumas are rare due to their elusive nature, the refuge is home to diverse wildlife such as howler monkeys, white-faced monkeys, sloths, coatimundis, and various bird species. The area also hosts water turtles, iguanas, basilisks, snakes, and numerous other animals.

Los Guatuzos is particularly renowned for its birdlife, boasting around 400 species including herons, cormorants, teal ducks, parrots, and sparrow hawks.

Returning to San Fernando Island, you have the opportunity to try fishing in the lake with the guidance of our experienced captain. A boxed lunch is provided during the day’s activities.

Day 3

After breakfast, our local guide accompanies us by boat back to San Carlos, concluding our enriching journey through the Solentiname Archipelago and Los Guatuzos Wildlife Refuge.
