The itinerary
DAY 1
Our adventure begins in San Carlos, where we embark on a boat journey through the tropical jungle along the historic San Juan River route, traversed by pirates, North American shipping companies, and Genoese merchants over centuries. Enjoy a refreshing swim in the pristine river amidst untouched natural surroundings. After approximately two and a half hours, we arrive at El Castillo village, nestled peacefully along the riverbank. Check into your chosen hotel and unwind.
As night falls, we embark on a boat tour illuminated by flashlight, venturing into the river’s ravines in search of crocodiles and caimans.
DAY 2
We continue upstream on the San Juan River to Bartola Refuge within the Indio-Maiz Biological Reserve—one of Central America’s vital ecosystems. Discover dense, lush vegetation teeming with toucans, macaws, hummingbirds, and diverse wildlife including deer, sloths, wild boars, pumas, jaguars, manatees, monkeys, and more. Our local guide assists in spotting these elusive creatures.
Returning to El Castillo, we explore the village and the Immaculate Conception fortress, built by the Spanish to defend against pirates and English adversaries. This site also marked the early studies for Napoleon III’s envisioned interoceanic canal, later realized in Panama.
Don’t miss this captivating blend of history and nature, culminating in a visit to a local artisan chocolate factory.
DAY 3
We start our day early, sailing back to San Carlos along the San Juan River, concluding our memorable journey through this historic and biodiverse region.
