Volcano Maderas

Day tour for exploring Volcano Maderas and swimming in the crater lagoon. Join us for this unforgettable adventure!

Under the term “walking on clouds,” as defined by Urban Dictionary: “The feeling you have when something very nice happens to you!”, we invite you to join us for an experience akin to walking on clouds. The Maderas volcano promises incredible surprises: besides encountering its diverse fauna, you’ll journey through a rainforest, emerge on a slope enveloped by clouds, and swim in the healing waters of its crater lagoon, dormant for thousands of years. This tour revolves around water—just remember to bring a couple of bottles with you!

The itinerary

We kick off this incredible tour at 5:30 in the morning directly from your hotel anywhere on Ometepe Island. After a 40-minute drive, we arrive at the base of the volcano. Leaving behind the comfort of the car, we embark on our hike.

Initially, we traverse fields in the rural areas of the island. About an hour into our journey, we begin ascending through the dry tropical forest, a natural habitat teeming with reptiles, birds, mammals, and ancient trees. It takes roughly 2 hours to ascend 700 meters above sea level, leaving the forest behind and often granting us a clear view of the lake, weather permitting.

Moving into the cloud forest, the terrain becomes more challenging and muddy. After another 2-hour ascent, we reach the summit of the volcano. If the weather is clear and the wind disperses the clouds, the view over the lake from this vantage point is spectacular.

But the adventure doesn’t end there! We continue our trek downhill to reach the dormant crater where you can swim in the lagoon—an experience like no other.

Finally, we descend and aim to return you to your hotel around 5 pm, concluding an unforgettable day of exploration and natural beauty on Ometepe Island.

What to bring?

We recommend dressing appropriately for the hike with long trousers and sturdy shoes such as hiking boots or sneakers with a good grip. Given that the second part of the hike is mostly in open terrain without shade, a waterproof jacket is advisable.

Please bring along at least 3 liters of water to stay hydrated, along with snacks and food for the hike. Don’t forget to pack a swimsuit for swimming in the lagoon, sun protection (sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat), and a spare shirt to change into if needed. These essentials will ensure you’re prepared for a comfortable and enjoyable trek on the volcano.
