The itinerary
Our incredible journey begins at 5:30 in the morning from your hotel anywhere on Ometepe Island. We drive for 35 minutes until we reach the volcano’s base. Leaving behind the comfort of our cars, we begin our ascent. Initially, we traverse fields, offering insights into the island’s typical farming practices. After an hour’s walk, we enter the ascent through the dry tropical forest, home to reptiles, birds, mammals, and ancient trees. It takes about 2 hours to ascend to 1000 meters above sea level, leaving the forest behind and enjoying a clear view of the lake.
The most challenging part begins here: the path steepens on rocky terrain for another 2 hours. We reach the summit around 1 PM, where we take a break and enjoy some food. Here, beside an active crater surrounded by smoke, you’ll feel on top of the world. After a brief rest, we embark on the 4-hour descent.
We return to the car and drive back to your hotel, aiming to arrive around 5 PM, concluding an unforgettable day of adventure on Ometepe Island.

What to bring?
We recommend dressing appropriately for the hike with hiking boots, long trousers, and a hat, especially since the second part of the hike is mostly in open terrain without shade. Please bring at least 4 liters of water to stay hydrated, along with snacks for the hike, sun protection (such as sunscreen and sunglasses), and a spare shirt. These essentials will ensure you’re prepared for a comfortable and enjoyable trek up Volcano Concepción.
